Look at these words from the theme song to the movie “Home Alone”:
Candles in the window,
shadows painting the ceiling,
gazing at the fire glow,
feeling that gingerbread feeling.
I can see.
Somewhere in my mem’ry,
Christmas joys all around me,
living in my mem’ry,
all of the music,
all of the magic, all of the fam’ly home here with me. (Lyrics by Leslie Bricusse, Music by John Williams)
Pictured here are some salt and flour dough ornaments that I made in the early 80’s for our Christmas tree, and most of them still survive! Yeller was ready to make one of them into a new toy as I took this photo, but I intervened and saved them.
The little smiles on these make me smile. Lots of memories come back about the house we lived in, my kids, my grandparents, parents, and family all coming around for the holidays. I understand that “gingerbread feeling” referred to in the lyrics.
Here is a card my son made for us in first grade, a Polaroid photo in a green construction paper frame. He is standing so straight, like a toy soldier. (This was just yesterday, of course.) Another smile to brighten the day.
I hope that no matter where you are, if you have all your family around you or not, that you will be able to find a wonderful memory from times past that can bring a smile to your heart. -Deb
